Dramatic and sensuous organ music from the Spanish Golden Age

Organ music of the Spanish Golden Age (1500-c1700) is noted for its dramatic musical language and range of tonal colour. Pieces range from contrapuntal Tientos to extraordinary Battle Scenes, depicting the fight between Good and Evil – or between the Spanish and the Muslim armies of al-Andalus during the centuries leading up to the 1492 Reconquista. This recital will explore the wide range of musical styles of the period with Tientos, a Diferencias, Pasacalle, Gaitilla and a concluding Batalha by Antonio de Cabezón, Sebastián Aguilera de Heredia, Francisco Correa de Arauxo, Pablo Bruna, Gabriel Menalt, Juan Cabanilles, Sebastián Durón, and António Correa Braga.

This follows Andrew’s recent Grosvenor Chapel recital of music from Francisco Correa de Arauxo’s monumental Facultad Orgánica, published 400 years ago in 1626.
